Overview

Threads, now a podcast.

Play and replay long Reddit threads, nothing leaves your device.

ThreadCast turns any Reddit thread into a hands-free listening experience. Build a queue, press play, and let it narrate posts and comments aloud, perfect for commuting, chores, the gym, or winding down for sleep.

Four voice engines, multi-voice narration, ten ambient soundscapes, and a Chrome side panel that stays open beside Reddit while you read. All on-device. All free. No accounts, no ads, no tracking.

🎙 Four voice engines, your choice

ThreadCast ships with four voice engines so you can pick the trade-off that matches your machine.

• System voices. Instant. Uses the voices already installed on your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux). Zero downloads, zero setup.
• AI Neural CPU. Natural-sounding neural speech that runs entirely on your CPU via WebAssembly. Downloads once, then plays offline.
• AI Neural GPU Lite. A lighter neural engine that runs on your GPU via WebGPU. A smaller one-time download than the full GPU tier, with quality close behind it.
• AI Neural GPU. The highest-quality engine, with eleven distinct voices and accents, running on your GPU via WebGPU. A larger one-time download, then fully offline.

Switch engines any time from the popup or side panel. ThreadCast remembers your pick.

🗣 Multi-voice narration

Each Reddit author gets their own consistent voice. ThreadCast detects gender from username cues and pronouns, then assigns a voice from the rotation, so a thread reads like a real conversation between distinct people, not a single monotone reading.

• Pick how many voices to rotate
• Filter voices by accent
• Set per-author overrides that persist across sessions
• Preview any voice before committing

📰 Posts and comments

Add the post and the conversation. Or comments only. Or specific comments, by clicking + on each one. Reorder the queue, then skip, scrub, and jump back with full transport control and a drag-to-seek scrubber, so you can rewind that punch line.

🪟 A side panel that stays put

Open ThreadCast as a Chrome side panel and your queue and transport stay docked beside Reddit while you keep browsing, with no popup that closes the moment you click away. Prefer the classic popup? Switch between side panel and popup any time in Settings.

😴 Sleep mode with ambient soundscapes

A separate playback mode designed for falling asleep. Slowed narration layered over a choice of ten ambient soundscapes:

Calm Night · Time · Twilight · Flute · Ocean · Lullaby · Stillness · Drift · Mellow · Cradle

Set a sleep timer and ThreadCast fades out gracefully so you drift off without a hard cut. Independent voice and ambient mix sliders. Configurable sleep playback rate.

⚙ Power-user settings

A full options page with:

• Speed, pitch, volume, and inter-sentence pause sliders
• Multi-voice rotation control with manual overrides
• Voice catalog with previews for every engine
• Per-author voice overrides
• Sleep mode rate, ambient soundscape, and fade-out duration
• Engine download manager with per-file progress bars
• Light, dark, and system themes, plus a toolbar toggle between side panel and popup
• Export and import all your settings as JSON

🔒 Private by design

ThreadCast does not collect, transmit, or store what you read on Reddit. Speech synthesis runs entirely on your device. No audio is ever sent to a server.

The optional AI neural engines download model weights once from a public Hugging Face mirror. After that, they run fully offline.

No tracking. No analytics. No ads. No accounts.

🚧 Coming soon

We're actively building the next chapter of ThreadCast:

• Save as MP3. Export a post, a comment, or your whole queue as a single audio file with chapters, to listen anywhere.
• Beyond Reddit. Open PDFs, EPUBs, web articles, or your own text and listen with the same on-device voices.

Both arrive in a future update.

How to use

1. Install ThreadCast from the Chrome Web Store.
2. Open Reddit (reddit.com or sh.reddit.com).
3. Hover any post or comment and click the + chip to add it to the queue.
4. Click the ThreadCast icon in your toolbar (or open the side panel) and press Play.
5. Open Settings to switch engines, customise voices, choose side panel vs popup, and configure sleep mode.

Supported platforms

• Chrome 114+ (and Chromium-based browsers: Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, Arc)
• Manifest V3
