Overview
CULPA on Vergil
CULPA on Vergil brings professor ratings from CULPA (Columbia University Professor Review Database) directly into Vergil — Columbia's course registration platform — so you can make informed enrollment decisions without switching tabs.
What it does:
When you browse courses on Vergil, CULPA on Vergil automatically detects instructor names and displays a compact rating badge next to each one. Each badge shows:
- Average rating (out of 5)
- Nugget status — Gold (4.0+), Silver (3.5+), or Bronze (3.0+)
- Number of reviews on CULPA
- A direct link to the professor's full CULPA profile
Badges appear both in course section rows and in the instructor autocomplete dropdown when searching. Hover over any badge for a quick summary. Click it to open the full CULPA profile in a new tab.
Why install it:
Every Columbia student knows the routine — open Vergil, find a course, copy the professor's name, open CULPA, search, read reviews, go back to Vergil, repeat. CULPA on Vergil eliminates that entirely. Ratings are right there, inline, as you browse.
Privacy
CULPA on Vergil collects no personal data. It does not track you, log your searches, or send any information about you anywhere. The only network requests it makes are to culpa.info to fetch professor ratings. Ratings are cached locally on your device for 24 hours to minimize requests. Nothing is stored in the cloud.
Permissions
- Storage — caches professor ratings locally to reduce API calls
- Host access to vergil.columbia.edu and culpa.info — required to read instructor names and fetch ratings
About
Built by two Columbia students, Trew Smith and Holden Bronson, out of real-world frustration with the course registration process. Not affiliated with Columbia University or CULPA.
