Overview
Cha Dictionary — instant English definitions and Chinese translation, right in your browser.
Hold Alt and select any word on a webpage to see a small popup with both an English definition and a Chinese translation. Perfect for English learners reading articles, Reddit, Wikipedia, or technical docs in their second language.
FEATURES
• Alt + select any word or short phrase to get a tooltip with the definition and Chinese translation, right next to your selection.
• Ctrl + Q opens a centered search box for typing a word manually — useful when text isn't selectable, or when you just want to look something up from memory.
• Pronunciation: every result has a speaker button. Cha plays real human recordings when Free Dictionary provides them, and falls back to your browser's built-in text-to-speech otherwise.
• Auto-pronounce: a small "auto" toggle next to the speaker. Click once, and Cha pronounces every word you look up. The setting is remembered across sessions.
SOURCES
Cha uses two well-known free APIs:
• Free Dictionary API (https://dictionaryapi.dev) — English definitions, parts of speech, examples, and audio.
• Youdao 有道 (https://dict.youdao.com) — English-to-Chinese translation, organized by part of speech.
PRIVACY
Cha does not collect, store, or transmit your browsing data. The only thing sent over the network is the specific word or phrase you look up, and only to the two dictionary services above. No tracking, no analytics, no account, no upgrades.
Free and open. Install and start reading.
