This world map was made by Willem Janszoon Blaeu. He was a cartographer born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He made a lot of maps for the VOC: de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (which means in English the United East India Company). At the time that this map was being made, Holland was in it's golden age. The economie was doing great thanks to a lot of trading over sea. The majority of all ships worldwide were dutch.
This particular map is called "Nova totius terrarum orbis geographica ac hydrographica tabula" which basically means the same as "map of the new world". The exact year that it was being made is 1635. This theme also resembles a desk, with the brown wood being the toolbar.
